Havis Tablet Docking Solutions

In-Vehicle Universal Docking System

We partnered with an industry leader in mobile workforce solutions to develop the next generation of a universal docking system. Our objective was to create a solution that seamlessly supports tablets of variable sizes and manufactures, delivering unmatched compatibility and performance across various markets notably in public safety.

The Challenge.

One dock to support multiple tablet sizes

We were tasked with creating an in-vehicle universal dock solution that supports a series of cases of commercial and consumer-grade tablets i.e. Samsung, Apple, and Microsoft.
Not only was there a challenge to meet several functional and environmental requirements but intellectual property constraints limited how cases would interface to the universal dock. The fallout challenged the accessibility and orientation of I/O ports but cable management within a VESA mounting. Maintaining a small footprint was a concern because the connection point was pushed off the back surface dock.
Develop a solution that scaled across several tablet brands and sizes allowing adaptability in future versions of tablets

Our Approach.

Anticipating future testing and development, we designed components and systems with flexibility in mind, creating accessible zones for easy team access and interface parts that could be revised with minimal system impact. A robust, hot-swappable power source was implemented, ensuring reliable performance in rugged environments while providing a self-contained solution. This design could seamlessly transition from deployment in the field to laboratory settings for ongoing development.

Our Solution.

By applying our adaptive approach, we seamlessly integrated into Havis' development team. Mapping out tablet dimensions early helped identify constraints, define size variations, and pinpoint fixed connection points between the case and dock. Through the design process, we developed a universal protection system at each corner while incorporating subtle design elements that highlight each tablet brand—all while elevating the prominent Havis brand.

A well-designed product serves its purpose efficiently and effectively.

The Outcome.

Two sizes of interchangeable bumper kits were designed to accommodate 13 tablet versions across four brands. By focusing the adjustability on the front housing to adapt to different tablet sizes, we maintained a common size for the back housing. This strategic decision reduced tooling requirements, saving Havis both significant manufacturing time and costs.

There are many constraints or limitations in developing a new product, but we always search for opportunities to bring unexpected innovation. In this case, the unexpected innovation was fewer injection molding tools and less time to market.

Working with Radiant Product Development has been an outstanding experience.  Chris and his team were able to jump into a critically strategic product and become an extension of our own product development team.  Their unique blend of mechanical aptitude, creative yet functional problem solving and keen eye for aesthetics has been an invaluable asset.

They stay on top of project management and the communication between our two teams has been seamless despite essentially being located across the country from one another.
