FAQ’s

  • Radiant was established in September 2022. Its founders, Chris and Justin, share a 15-year professional journey from their tenure at leading product design company, Juggernaut Design/Defense. Our collective design expertise spans a wide spectrum of industries - Military/Defense, scientific and laboratory equipment, point-of-sale, and consumer products. Radiant was formed to provide innovative ideas through product design services for both large and small businesses.

  • We can help support many phases of product development, from initial strategy through to manufacturing handoff. Or we can support you where you need us most, focusing on smaller, select phases of engagement. In most scenarios, our minimum engagement typically starts at $10,000. Let's discuss your project or idea so that we can provide a more accurate cost proposal.

  • This question is asked often, and it is really difficult to pinpoint an answer because there are so many variables, from product complexity, testing, user/focus group feedback, certifications, etc. In a perfect world, we recommend our clients allocate up to 8-15 weeks, depending on the complexity and the speed at which client feedback.

    2-3 weeks for research/strategy,

3-4 weeks for industrial design concept development,

    3-5 weeks for mechanical development/implementation,

    3-4 weeks for prototyping.

In most cases, this doesn’t mean you are ready for tooling!

We will gladly share a case study of our creative process and work - walk through a timeline from start to finish to give you a more realistic timeline for your project. Designing products can look very different depending on business goals and working budget.

  • This question comes up frequently, and giving an exact estimate can be challenging due to the presence of several variables. Nevertheless, in many cases, we segment project estimates into distinct phases to ensure transparency and clarity in assessing the required effort.

  • User experience (UX) design is a key component within our industrial design service. Creating memorable and enjoyable user experiences within a product solution is one of the key indicators of successful development. Although we do provide UX design development, the expertise of our internal team lies in other areas of industrial design. Some firms specialize exclusively in UX design and provide more in-depth research and evaluation in this discipline. Most projects we work on do not need the level of UX design these companies provide. At Radiant, we accommodate a sufficient level of understanding and direction of UX design applicable to most of the projects we come across.

  • This varies. Our standard payment terms are net 15 days. We offer flexibility to our long-standing clients and established relationships, allowing for a net payment period of 30 days or more.

  • At the beginning of any project, many preconceived ideas won't materialize or reach fruition. The problem-solving process in new product development is rarely linear. Our objective with any client project is to offer transparency throughout the process, including risks and opportunities. With a clear objective of providing a solution that meets your business goals and delivering products your customers will love.

  • Much of today's product development has undergone a digital transformation, shifting heavily towards software development through mobile apps and web design. Radiant is currently focused on physical hardware design and not the development of the digital experience through software and web design. Many of the hardware products we design incorporate a display or digital interface, and we have partners that specialize in these areas. Our in-house team does provide UI design directions, through graphic design concepts and storyboarding. If your company has a product that requires the development of both physical components and digital design through software development, reach out to us and we'll give you a recommendation for an all-inclusive development path.

  • In many cases, especially larger corporations, an in-house creative team already exists. One of our strengths is the ability to adapt and challenge the status quo without compromising the creative value you need. Our team of product designers easily adapt to various workflows, and our goal is to find the most effective way to communicate and share ideas between our team members and yours.

  • Our industrial product design team puts a great emphasis on testing and developing products that are meaningful, innovative, and memorable for users. There is not a singular, linear approach to achieving this with every project. Consumers vary greatly from industry to industry, and project goals often change on a whim. Although we try to establish requirements early on to limit changes, it is sometimes unavoidable. This requires our product designers to be agile, so we do not skip a beat with a shifting design process. One of the strongest traits a product designer has is the ability to adapt quickly, but still remain on track with the higher-level project goals. This may require looking for additional resources, or a new technology to help aid in the development process.

  • 3D modeling services at some level are applicable for all industries and any business. It is not a requirement for every project though, especially in early stages of product development that are more heavily focused on research, strategy, and brand identity. We can work with your company and team to evaluate your projects to determine if 3D modeling services are needed at any point.

  • Not every project requires a highly involved level of 3D product modeling or visual communication. The benefits of 3D product modeling services must align with the goals of the project and business plans. Our internal project team and outside partners help to evaluate and suggest the level of 3D product modeling that would provide the best value for your team. Strong 3D product modeling is critical for manufacturing - we can help build and prepare files that manufacturers will use for tooling and production.

  • Radiant gives support for the full-scale product development process. Although we are not a manufacturing company or exclusive prototyping firm, our goal is to provide a full spectrum of services through both our in-house team as well as our local and international partners. To provide the best development, we handle product prototype design work in-house and through the quickest means to validate and iterate. Manufacturing and production are the expertise of our partners, and we do our best to provide options that can fit your plans and business model.

  • One of the big goals for any project is to stay on budget. Manufacturing costs and the production process take up a large part of a project's budget, and our design team looks at efficiencies throughout the entire product development process. On the front end of development, design decisions early on in the concept phase play a critical role in achieving a solution that will translate well to efficient manufacturing operations. Implementing Design for Manufacturing (DFM) practices as early as possible will help save costs later on in the manufacturing process. We often work closely with a production engineer and manufacturing engineers to make sure we are designing components with proper manufacturing principles as early as possible. This ultimately will provide cost-effective design solutions that can be executed by manufacturing processes with cost-reduction techniques.

  • With so much hype recently about AI, it's important to remember AI is just a tool. It can be an excellent industrial design tool for specific tasks but not so great for others. We will utilize AI in our design process as a supporting role. We contend that AI lacks certain aspects of humanity, particularly empathy, which we consider essential for a user-centered approach to problem-solving and design. AI and machine learning will continue to develop exponentially. We are always evaluating to see how the latest tools for digital development, including AI, can help us bring you value in the design process.

  • Whether starting on the journey with a single product offering or managing a multigenerational brand, a product company must effectively communicate its identity and recognition while establishing an underlying trust within its customer base. We firmly believe that without a clearly defined identity, the lack of consistency and a competitive edge can pose significant challenges for any company seeking success.

  • We partner with companies that specialize in software development/software engineering, and we can carry that value on to you in the development of your connected devices requiring IoT technology. As a combined team we provide engineering services, hardware design supporting mobile applications. Contact us to learn more about our IoT product development process.

  • In the development of IoT devices, industrial design plays a paramount role in shaping the overall success and appeal of consumer products, especially connected devices. It extends far beyond mere aesthetics but contributes to improving functionality, leading to increasing user adoption of smart devices. Triggering a positive experience through user interaction and increasing market competitiveness. We don't see why similar attributes can't be carried across multiple industries such as law enforcement, point of sale, biosciences, where or devices detecting or saving lives. All tools should enforce some level of confidence.

  • No. If you are a startup with a medical device idea, we can guide you to help you understand the challenging involvement of bringing a medical device to market. We can work with you to source third-party agencies to assist in the FDA approvals e.g., premarket approvals (PMA), 510(k). Like most NPD ventures, especially innovative medical devices, will require extensive support and funding for clinical trials and testing. Contact us to see if were a suitable fit for collaboration with your team and other medical device developers you may already be working with.

  • In the development of point-of-sale devices and other appliance design products, industrial design plays a paramount role in shaping the overall success and appeal to consumers. It extends far beyond mere aesthetics but contributes to improving functionality, leading to effectiveness and successful user adoption. We don't see why similar attributes can't be carried across multiple industries, such as law enforcement, IoT, biosciences, and other health products. All tools should enforce some level of confidence.

  • When designing healthcare products, like medical devices, industrial design plays a paramount role in shaping the overall success and appeal of devices for healthcare providers. It extends far beyond mere aesthetics but contributes to improving functionality through human factors, leading to increasing user adoption. Triggering a positive experience through user interaction and product safety. We don't see why similar attributes can't be carried across multiple industries such as law enforcement, point of sale, biosciences, where or devices detecting or saving lives in a different venue. All "tools" need to enforce a level of confidence to create enjoyment, resulting in a sense of pride in their work.

  • The principles of design remain consistent, whether one is working on rugged devices such as tactical radios or audio kits mounted in Polaris RZR SXS vehicles. At a minimum, design involves understanding the problem, propose solutions, test, and iterate. Repeat as needed. Developing rugged gear for the battlefield use involves heightened stakes, and the invaluable insights we've learned translate into designing gear for civilian use i.e highly usable unintended devices used in point of sale. These field-acquired insights significantly influence our approach to consumer product design requiring similar constraints i.e. ingress protection against water and dust and added safety to users with less demanding situations seen in the battlefield.

  • In the audio industry, industrial design plays a paramount role in shaping the overall success and appeal of consumer products, especially consumer electronics. It extends far beyond mere aesthetics but contributes to improving functionality, leading to increasing user adoption. Triggering a positive experience through user interaction and increasing market competitiveness. We don't see why similar attributes can't be carried across multiple industries where devices are designed to save lives or protect assets such as law enforcement/Defense, point of sale(POS), biosciences, etc. At the end of the day, we develop tools that help people be their best in work and play. All tools should provide satisfaction through confidence and enjoyment to the user, whether it's high fidelity speakers, voice assistants, a coffee machine, or a vacuum cleaner. When collaborating with audio companies who demand an aesthetic to blend with high performance to achieve a perfect sound experience for a discerning customer, we find this emotional.

  • In the consumer industry, industrial design plays a paramount role in shaping the overall success and appeal of consumer products, especially consumer electronics. It extends far beyond mere aesthetics but contributes to improving functionality, leading to increasing user adoption. Triggering a positive experience through user interaction and increasing market competitiveness. We don't see why similar attributes can't be carried across multiple industries such as law enforcement, point of sale, biosciences, where or devices detecting or saving lives. All tools should enforce some level of confidence.
